Paramedics from the El Cerrito Fire Department visited the Webelos Den meeting on January 27, 2022 and spoke with the Scouts about their role as First Responders.

They also showed the Webelos a lot of their really cool equipment, and one lucky Scout even got the opportunity to test out the ECG machine. The visit got the Scouts very excited to learn and practice first aid techniques to complete the “First Responder” adventure at their next Den meeting. At the conclusion of the visit, the Webelos presented their visitors with Hero awards that they’d made for them ahead of time.

Two weeks ago, Pack 104 Cubmaster RJ “The Great” Lane, shared that the Webelos visited a Cool Pumpkin Patch (called the Cool Pumpkin Patch!) in Dixon. https://www.coolpatchpumpkins.com/

RJ reports:

“The farm and pumpkin patch are set up very well for COVID safety protocol. The staff is taking things very seriously. RJ noted that the majority of people were wearing masks and doing their best to socially distance.”

“They have a fantastic Corn Maze that is about 3 miles if you do not have to back track too much. I highly recommend bringing a backpack with plenty of water, snacks, hats and sunblock. There are not spots to buy water or fill water bottles along the Maze. I will be purchasing Corn Maze Patches if you plan on attending with your den or family, please let me know (and give me a number of patches to get for your den)”

The Corn Maze cost $15 per person (but worth it in the end) Parking is free. Pumpkins are reasonable (We got 4 for $16) They have pedal cars and hay rides. You can borrow a wheelbarrow and pick your own Pumpkin in the field.

On the weekends they have food and drinks for sale.

Why did the fish get bad grades?

This month, all scouts of Pack 104 will be encouraged to fish with the family or den!

Please go fishing with your family or Den and take pictures of the fishing (and fish if you are catching). Scouts who submit photos can have them posted on the Pack 104 website!

Please visit any of our public piers in the Bay or go fishing anywhere in CA if you have a fishing license.

If you do not have a CA State Fishing Licence, you may fish off any public pier in the Bay. There are no specific requirements, just try fishing for a while.  If there are any specific questions, please email RJ at rjthegrt@gmail.com. He would be happy to provide advice and answer any questions you might have concerning where, when, what and how of fishing in the Bay.

August 16 | Annual Camp Herms Clean Up 

On August 16th at 10 am to 12 pm we will be doing our Annual Camp Herms Clean Up. Sean will have many projects for us to tackle as Dens or individual families. I hope to see everyone there, Camp Herms is a second home for our Pack and need to show it some love. Coffee and Snacks will be provided. Please bring personal water bottles.

August 27th | Pack 104 Meeting

Mark your calendars for our first Pack Meeting of the year. This will take place via zoom and will be on August 27th at 7 pm.

We had yet another fantastic turn-out at this year’s Pinewood Derby. There were amazingly creative and futuristic cars, sleek innovations, shiny aerodynamic speedsters (and drivers with questionably attained licenses).

William, Neil and Simar took home the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes, respectfully, for their speedy inventions! These Pack 104 gearheads outdid themselves this year! Thanks again to this year’s organizers and volunteers, Thuy, RJ, John, Candace, Aubrey, Nikki and Christopher and anyone else who pitched in to make this year’s event a great success.

As this year’s AOL Den bridged to Boy Scouts, several Pack 104 alumni participated in the ceremony and welcomed them to Troop 24.  Congratulations to the members of Den 5!  It’s been a joy watching your growth and achievement over the years as Cub Scouts, and we wish you all the best in the next stage of their Scouting careers.

THE BIG EVENT

The 2018 Pinewood Derby will be held at 6:30 pm on Friday, April 13 in the Camp Herms Lodge.

WEIGH-IN & REGISTRATION

Weigh-in and registration will be held at the Camp Herms Craft Shack on:

Wednesday, April 11 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. **CARS MUST BE REGISTERED BY 8:00 PM ON APRIL 11 IN ORDER TO COMPETE ON FRIDAY**

WORKSHOPS

Workshops provide an opportunity for Scouts and Akelas to use our Pack-owned power tools, get a sneak-peek at what other Scouts are working on, and receive pointers and tips from other Scouts, Akelas and our resident experts Steve and RJ. All Scouts are welcome to attend any or all of the scheduled workshops.

Workshops are planned for the following dates:

Tuesday, March 27 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm
Tuesday, April 3 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm
Tuesday, April 10 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm

All workshops will be held in the Craft Shack at Camp Herms. Attendance is optional and there’s no need to RSVP – just drop in.

DESIGN COMPETITION

In addition to the races, Scouts will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite cars in the following categories:

1. Best Scout Spirit
2. Best Design
3. Best Detailing/Painting
4. Best Use of Accessories
5. Funniest Car
6. Most Futuristic
7. Most Original
8. Most Realistic

A certificate will be awarded to the car which receives the most votes in each category, so be creative!

Webelos Den 3 (the Hawks) visited a meeting of our sister unit Troop 104 on Monday at the Korematsu Middle School Gymnasium.  The older scouts taught the Cubs some new knots and all the boys got to bring home wooden knot boards with their handiwork attached.

Pack 104 marched in the City of El Cerrito’s Centennial Parade along with Troop 104 and local Girl Scout groups.  Watch the video (Pack 104 is at 16:10 in it)
